One thing Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee does exceptionally well is to respect tradition. The people who work there carry on virtually every method first established by Jack Daniel way back in 1866. For example, the perfect barrel is a crucial ingredient in producing a perfect whiskey. That's because whiskey acquires its final flavour and colour while aging in the barrel. Hence, the barrels used to age Jack Daniel's Smooth Sippin' Tennessee Whiskey are hand-fashioned by a highly skilled barrel raiser, who builds a frame with 31 staves in a ring formation. The barrel frame is steamed to bend the staves into shape. The inside of the barrel is toasted to bring sugars and flavour to the wood's surface. A second ring is placed atop the formation, and the barrel is bound with its six hoops. The inside is then charred a second time before a bunghole is drilled into one of the staves.
